The weather was the winner on day one of Nottinghamshire’s final Vitality County Championship Division One match against Warwickshire with only 15.2 overs of play possible.
The home side finished the day on 33/2 with Freddie McCann and Joe Clarke both unbeaten on four and nought respectively after the visitors won the toss and elected to bowl.
There was no play possible in the morning due to a wet outfield and lunch was subsequently taken early.
Thanks to good work from the ground staff, the game began at 1.10pm and Haseeb Hameed got off the mark from his second ball faced with glorious cover drive for four off Olly Hannon-Dalby.
The Nottinghamshire skipper was removed soon after, however, as Ed Barnard skilfully beat the opener’s defences and knocked back his off stump.
Ben Slater looked in good touch during the early part of his innings as he drove Hannon-Dalby to the extra-cover boundary, but the players went off for the first time after 10.5 overs due to rain, which resulted in an 80-minute delay. Only one ball was possible once the players returned before the rain struck again with the Green and Golds on 27/1.
Play did manage to resume 12 minutes later, though, and Slater capitalised on a Michael Booth delivery to collect his third off-side boundary.
With the light beginning to deteriorate and batting becoming increasingly difficult, Slater edged to Will Rhodes at first slip to hand Hannon-Dalby his first wicket.
Only two more balls were possible after the loss of Slater before bad light set in and the umpires took the players off for the day.
Reflecting on a meagre first day which allowed little time for play to flow, Head Coach Peter Moores said: "We will need to keep it really simple from here. There's so many things going on that you could focus on, but we're just focusing on playing our game.
"It was a good toss for Warwickshire to win, and - to be fair to them - they bowled pretty well. I also thought the umpires managed the game really well, to be honest.
"We'll come tomorrow on what looks like a decent pitch, we'll look to build some partnerships and a decent first innings score.
"It's a game which has a significant impact on the season and on the club. Players are always excited to play in games which matter, so as a team we need to be prepared to do our part and to take responsibility when someone gets a chance to impact the game."
