Nottinghamshire’s new-look squad played out a hard-fought first day against Surrey in the County Championship, with five wickets the return for their toil.

Rob Lord and 16-year-old Farhan Ahmed each claimed wickets on their First-Class bows for the club - the latter becoming the youngest ever to represent the Green and Golds in the format - as the visitors totalled 339 by stumps.

Rory Burns led from the front with 161 while Ryan Patel made 77, the pair combining for a second-wicket stand worth 175 to suppress Notts’ efforts.

The hosts’ endeavor remained undimmed, and they were rewarded with a trio of wickets in the final stages for Ahmed, who finished the day with figures of 4-69 from his 28 overs.

With Surrey having won the toss, Lord claimed the sole dismissal of a nip and tuck first session by tempting Dom Sibley to flirt with a ball he eventually attempted to leave, but guided to Freddie McCann at second slip.

Burns and Patel remained resolute, though, accumulating steadily to guide the hosts to lunch on 88, with the former not out on 49 having survived a strong lbw appeal off Ahmed in the 17th over.

He brought up his fourth fifty of the season with a clip into the leg side upon resumption before the pair continued in their patient style - creeping the run rate up to 2.9 by the drinks break at 51 overs.

In the next set, Patel brought up his own half-century from 133 balls, with Surrey well positioned on 147 and Lord subsequently deferring to a short-ball ploy.

It was one managed well by both, with their 150 partnership from 280 balls reached in the 57th over, and Hameed forced to again rotate his six-pronged attack.

Burns brought up his century from 169 deliveries, enjoying a slice of fortune as he edged Lyndon James for four, while his partner was 23 shy of the landmark when Notts made their second breakthrough.

Ahmed found bite in the pitch to induce an edge from Patel, Verreynne - himself making his First-Class debut for Notts - taking the catch behind the stumps, leaving Surrey heading to the second break on 203.

Will Jacks displayed a resoluteness at odds with his white-ball strokemarking in the initial stages of his innings, skipping down the track to hit Liam Patterson-White the only sign of true intent.

He and Burns mustered their fifty partnership off 93 balls and continued to occupy the crease amidst a barrage of spin, with 65 overs bowled between Ahmed, McCann and Patterson-White across the day.

Burns’ 150 arrived with 12 overs of the day remaining, before the new-ball brought fresh impetus to both sides.

Jacks accelerated his rate, reaching his fifty from 63 balls by slapping Farhan Ahmed over mid off, only for Burns to then top edge the same bowler to mid-wicket, with Foakes edging behind next ball.

He claimed his fourth an over later, Jacks finding James long-off, with Sai Sudharsan and Jordan Clark seeing the visitors through to the close.
