Assistant Coach Ant Botha gave credit to 16-year-old spin-bowler Farhan Ahmed, who took four wickets for 69 runs from 28 overs having walked onto the field as the youngest First Class debutant for Nottinghamshire.
The Notts bowling attack was spearheaded by three home-grown spinners in Freddie McCann, Ahmed and Liam Patterson-White, whose contributions helped to stem the flow of run as Surrey kept wickets in hand.
The visitors finished the day on 339-5, with Botha also showing his appreciation for seamer Rob Lord, who took the first wicket of the day in his own First-Class Debut.
