Despite a rallying effort in their second innings, Nottinghamshire fell to defeat against Hampshire on day three of their LV= Insurance County Championship match at Trent Bridge.

On another day affected by rain, Notts finished on 294 all out, 116 short of Hampshire's target set yesterday.

67 for Joe Clarke and 81 for Tom Moores offered hope for the home supporters, but a valiant defence with the bat couldn't quite get Nottinghamshire over the line.

A spell of drizzle disappeared in time for play to commence on time, with Nottinghamshire facing the task of garnering 411 runs across the final two days of play.

Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater were assigned to get Notts off to a solid start and found two boundaries off the first Hampshire over of the day.

The first wicket fell with 19 on the board, with a pinpoint Mohammed Abbas delivery finding the stumps.

Will Young compiled a stand of 21 with Hameed before being caught behind by Brown off the bowling of Abbott, with the rain returning shortly afterwards.

Hameed and Montgomery were next to fall after an early lunch, but Clarke was in full flow before the next weather-enforced interruption to move to a sublime fifty from 91 balls.

The right-hander continued after the break before being bowled by Fuller for 67, but Moores soon reached his own half-century off 78 balls, ultimately falling to Ian Holland for 81.

Lyndon James fell for 21 as Abbas rattled the stumps again, with Hutton caught behind by Brown off Fuller to end a partnership of 16 with Calvin Harrison.

Harrison dampened the optimism of the Hampshire attack, barricading well while finding the boundary and 39 classy runs.

But as he and Pettman were removed, hopes of a Nottinghamshire win were dimmed for good, ending on 294, in response to the 411 set by the visitors.
