Opening batter Phil Salt described the “very special” feeling of contributing in an England shirt after leading the Three Lions to their record IT20 victory over India.

“Any time you put an England shirt on, you want to do well, and you want to be the guy that puts a hand up,” said Salt.

“That’s sort of my thinking, where I don’t want to build up too much and I want to do the basics to contribute.”

Salt blasted 70 off 44 balls, including seven fours and three sixes, as England posted 201-7, a total they comfortably defended as world champions India were skittled for just 76.

Although the 125-run winning margin fell short of the hosts’ record winning margin in all T20 cricket - that being the 146 runs they beat South Africa by last summer - it was still a new largest win over India.

“The way we executed our plans was excellent, because it’s not the easiest ground to bowl at, with it being very friendly to left-handers,” added Salt.

“Six of their top seven are lefties, and I think we did really well to execute. I’m really pleased for Jofra [Archer] and [Josh] Tongue.

“Especially in Tonguey’s second game, for him to get four-fer and execute like that, it’s really good signs for him.”
