Daniel Hogg’s maiden five-fer on First-Class debut sent Durham on the way to a final-day victory in the Vitality County Championship, as Nottinghamshire were beaten by an innings and 17 runs in Chester-le-Street.
Jack Haynes was unable to build further on the good work done at the crease on day three, as the Durham bowlers quickly stifled their visitors’ attempts to claw the game back into balance, Hogg taking a highly impressive seven-wicket haul to take the plaudits.
Clear Sunday morning skies gave the green light for an 11am start at the Seat Unique Riverside. Like he was on day three, Lyndon James was at the crease for the commencement of play, this time alongside half-centurion Jack Haynes whose valiant efforts the day before had helped rescue hopes of a draw.
The task for the final day, however, remained an immense challenge for the Green and Golds, as Durham needed four wickets for victory with an innings to spare.
And their first breakthrough of the day came in the fourth over of the morning session, Haynes finally dismissed for 69 after a tremendous stand at the crease, as Scott Borthwick stooped low for a smart catch at first slip after Hogg found an outside edge for his fourth wicket.
It didn’t take long for Hogg to again get the better of his counterpart’s outside edge, this time that of Calvin Harrison who guided Hogg into the slips as the 19-year-old celebrated a maiden five-fer on debut.
Olly Stone did his best to rally alongside James, tallying 29 and putting on a commendable 50-run partnership for the ninth wicket, but he was trapped by Hogg lbw in the 115th over of the innings as Durham sensed victory was near.
It took 12 further deliveries to see the final wicket fall, Hutton couldn’t stop the in-form Hogg from finding an outside edge as Ollie Robinson took the game-winning catch from behind the stumps, the hosts celebrating an innings’ victory at the Riverside.
The Green and Golds take two bonus points, and will regroup ahead of another crucial contest in the County Championship, hosting defending champions Surrey at Trent Bridge for their penultimate home match of the season on Thursday 29 August.
