Three wickets each for Brett Hutton, Lyndon James and Dane Paterson were the highlights for Nottinghamshire on Day One of their LV= Insurance County Championship contest with Hampshire.

Toby Pettman also took a wicket on his First-Class debut for Notts, who bowled Hampshire out for 166 at Trent Bridge.

Ben Slater went on to hit 31, with Tom Moores counter-attacking with an unbeaten 24, as the hosts ended the day on 87/5, trailing by 79 runs.

After a rain-affected morning session, the clouds rolled back in as both sides emerged for a delayed start shortly after 1pm, with Pettman in to make his debut for Notts in First-Class cricket, replacing Jake Ball in the only change to the home team.

The decision by captain Haseeb Hameed to bowl first after winning the toss proved immediately fruitful.

Brett Hutton took his third successive wicket during the opening over of an innings, as Ian Holland was caught behind by Calvin Harrison without scoring.

Pettman stuck next, with Lyndon James pouching Fletcha Middleton’s effort at Extra Cover.

Two wicket maidens were followed by another maiden each for Hutton and Pettman, with Hampshire scoreless off four stupendous overs.

Nick Gubbins and James Vince helped reduce the pressure that the away side was under, gathering 68 before the third wicket fell.

Vince had his pads rapped by James for 22 before the bowler repeated the same feat two balls later, this time at the expense of Brown for a duck.

James added a fifth wicket before the end of the afternoon session, as Liam Dawson was caught behind by Tom Moores for two.

Gubbins then fell just one short of a half-century, deflecting Paterson’s delivery onto the stumps with the first ball of the final over of the afternoon session, bringing about a premature Tea break.

Paterson emerged in a dogged mood after the break and snaffled his third wicket four balls into the evening session.

Keith Barker deflected the seamer’s ball off his outside edge, with Matthew Montgomery producing an excellent catch at slip to remove the left-hander after he hit a solitary boundary.

Fuller and Organ then amassed an eighth-wicket partnership of 73, but an easy catch for Harrison at slip off Hutton’s bowing put an end to the former's time with the bat after 46 runs.

Will Young flew through the air to take an athletic two-handed reach off Paterson’s delivery and take the wicket of Abbott, and when Organ looped Hutton’s ball into Joe Clarke’s cupped hands for 26, Notts completed a successful bowling stint.

Responding to the visitors' first-innings 166, Haseeb Hameed edged behind to be the first to fall, before Will Young was bowled by Holland for 13.

The Wisconsin-born seamer proved a serious threat, removing Slater for 31 and dismissing  Clarke shortly afterwards.

But Montgomery and Moores held their ground steadily, gathering a partnership of 31 before the South African was caught by Brown off the bowling of Holland.

Moores was joined by Hutton to see the day out, with Notts reducing the arrears to 79 at stumps.
