Notts batter Haseeb Hameed spoke on a finely poised contest in the capital, as late wickets left the visitors in a strong position for day four of their clash with Surrey.
Surrey posted 200/5 at the close, with Brett Hutton, Dane Paterson and Calvin Harrison picking up important wickets to keep the possibility of a win well and truly alive.
Hameed touched on captaining Nottinghamshire for the first time in First-Class cricket, due to the strain suffered by Steven Mullaney, having also made a valuable contribution at the crease in their first innings alongisde centurion Will Young.
