Overseas arrival Will Young spoke on his stride to a first century in Nottinghamshire whites on his debut against Surrey, and on other key performances as Notts solidified their place in a tight contest at the Kia Oval.

The New Zealand international, along with an important contribution from stand-in skipper Haseeb Hameed - deputising for Steven Mullaney (side strain) - ended the day undefeated on 106 to help Notts post 248/5 at the close.

Young spoke on his partnership with Hameed, and paid tribute to a memorable innings from Lyndon James who secured his first First-Class five-fer in the morning session.
