Harry Gurney feels he has enjoyed one of his best seasons as a player after adding victory in the Caribbean Premier League to a strong Vitality Blast campaign.

Gurney secured his first CPL title last weekend, taking two wickets in the final as his Barbados Tridents outfit overcame Guyana Amazon Warriors.

The triumph came less than a month after the left-armer completed his 2019 campaign for the Outlaws, taking 22 wickets at 18.00 as Notts reached their third Finals Day in four years.

“I think it has been one of my most successful seasons,” said Gurney.

“In particular, the CPL campaign was one of my more successful ones. I was really chuffed to get it under my belt, and it hopefully sets me up with confidence for the winter.

“The call from the Tridents only came the day before Vitality Blast Finals Day, and it was all a bit out of the blue.

“It was such a relaxed environment to play in, and there’s a real party atmosphere in all of the stadiums, so to win it was the icing on the cake.”

Gurney and fellow Outlaw Alex Hales were part of a Tridents team who were regarded as underdogs for the final in some quarters, having lost to their opponents in their three previous encounters.

But the 32-year-old felt that the mood in the Tridents camp was positive despite their unfavourable record.

“They’d gone through the entire competition unbeaten at that stage, and they’d beaten us three times earlier in the competition, but we just had this weird feeling that we were going to win,” he said.

“Each game of cricket is an individual event; whoever turns up in the final and performs under pressure wins the trophy, and fortunately on that day it was us.

“It always helps having familiar faces in the team, particularly if they’re from Notts. Alex and I spent a fair bit of time together.”

Gurney’s next limited-overs assignment will be in the Middle East, after he was picked up by the newly-formed Abu Dhabi outfit for the upcoming edition of the T10 league.

The Outlaws quick will feature alongside England spinner Moeen Ali and Pakistan left-armer Mohammad Amir, after the trio were amongst those selected by ex-England Head Coach Trevor Bayliss.

Gurney was a member of the T10-winning Quetta Gladiators side last year, and it is a tournament he looks upon fondly.

“I’m really looking forward to it – it’s a good fun, short, sharp tournament,” he said.

“All the teams stay in the same hotel and there are a lot of friendly faces there, whether people from around the world who I’ve played with before or English faces.

“I’ll probably take my family over as well, and it should be a lot of fun.”
