Opening batsman Chris Nash insists new overseas batsman Ross Taylor is the ‘perfect fit’ for Nottinghamshire.
The New Zealander will link up with the rest of the Trent Bridge squad following his country’s two-Test series with England, which finishes on April 3.
Nash, who played with Taylor at Sussex in 2016 and 2017, says Notts can expect the 34-year-old to bring ability, experience and commitment to the cause.
“I don’t think you can ask for anything more in an overseas player,” said the Cuckfield-born right-hander. “He’s a top man.”
“Ross comes in with no ego and, with his record, he walks into any team. He’s desperate to do well for whatever team he plays for.”
“Ross comes in with no ego and, with his record, he walks into any team. He’s desperate to do well for whatever team he plays for.
“He’s played a huge amount of international games, captained a very successful New Zealand side and played all around the world, so to have that is priceless.
“The way he plays as well fits in with how we want to play our cricket. Speaking to Mooresy (Peter Moores), Franksy (Paul Franks) and all the coaches, we want to play aggressive cricket – and Ross fits into that mould.
“Having played with him at Sussex, I know he wants to perform to the best of his ability and if he doesn’t get runs, then he is as disappointed as anyone and when he does, he is happy to be contributing to a win.
“I have stayed in touch with him over the last few years and speaking to him over the last couple of weeks I know he is really looking forward to getting to Trent Bridge.”
Nash has recently returned from an extended stint in South Africa, first working on his batting with former Proteas international Gary Kirsten in Cape Town and then flying to join his Notts teammates for their pre-season tour in Potchefstroom.
“I have opened the batting all my professional career, but I think if you can do that they you can just as easily bat three, four or five as well.”
He opened in the friendly games the team played against Yorkshire, scoring 83 in the 50-over match against the White Rose County, but is happy to take any position in the batting order when the season gets underway.
Nash said: “I have opened the batting all my professional career, but I think if you can do that they you can just as easily bat three, four or five as well.
“For me, wherever I’m needed, I will happily bat. I’ve come here to help out and win some trophies, and wherever I fit into that I will try to do a good job.”
