England are 1-0 down in their two-Test series with New Zealand after losing by an innings and 49 runs on the fifth day in Auckland.
Defeat had seemed inevitable from the moment the tourists were bowled out for 58 on day one at Eden Park.
But bad weather and a better second innings effort from England had raised hopes they could salvage a draw, only for them to be dismissed for a second time in the final session for 320 after New Zealand had declared their first innings on 427-8.
Beginning the day on 132-3, Joe Root’s side knew they needed to bat all day, with seven wickets in hand.
But it was a task that was to prove beyond them, despite Ben Stokes’ 66 from 188 balls and Chris Woakes’ 52 from 118.
Trent Boult took his tally of wickets for the match to nine as he finished with 3-67, while fellow paceman Neil Wagner (3-77) and leg-spinner Todd Astle (3-39) also found success.
England now head to Christchurch for the second Test, which starts on Friday, where they will bid to level the series.
Meanwhile, Samit Patel was a Pakstan Super League winner with Islamabad United, after their victory in the final over Peshawar Zalmi.
He took 2-26 from his four overs at the top of the innings - including the key wickets of Kamran Akmal and Mohammad Hafeez - as Zalmi were restricted to 148-9 from their 20 overs.
In reply, Islamabad made 154-7 to win with 3.1 overs to spare as Luke Ronchi scored 52 and Zahibzada Farhan 44.
