Riki Wessels scored the 19th first class century of his career on the second day of Nottinghamshire's Specsavers County Championship match against Durham at Trent Bridge.

The 30-year old, doubling up as wicketkeeper in the absence of the injured Chris Read, scored an unbeaten 159 as the home county totalled 534 before being bowled out after 144.4 overs.

Wessels scored his runs from 211 balls and hit 20 fours.

Scott Borthwick took all four Notts’ wickets to go down during the day, finishing with figures of five for 79.

Durham responded with 193 for four in the second half of the day, with Borthwick adding an unbeaten half century and Jackson Bird taking four for 59.

The day began with Notts on 353 for six in their first innings, with Wessels on 46 not out and Brett Hutton on 33 not out and it took four overs before the first runs came off the bat.

When it arrived, a toed slash to the third man fence, it brought up Wessels’ third championship fifty of the summer, the landmark reached in 92 balls, with seven fours.

Despite a slight acceleration in the run rate Notts had to make do with just four batting points, settling for a score of 389 for six at the end of the 110th over.

Two overs later Wessels whipped Chris Rushworth away for four to bring up the century partnership.

Wessels duly advanced to his hundred, his third against Durham, getting there from 156 balls, with 13 boundaries.

Hutton’s third career fifty then followed, brought up from 121 deliveries, nine of which were hit for four.

Borthwick began to make inroads into the lower order soon after lunch, taking the last four wickets. Hutton was first to go, pulling the leg spinner into the hands of sub fielder Graham Clark at deep midwicket.

Jake Ball hit a four and a six in his brief 10 but then fell in similar fashion, Graham Onions taking the catch this time.

Jackson Bird chopped on for 11 and Harry Gurney edged to slip, leaving Wessels unbeaten with his highest score since 2012.

Durham’s openers flew out of the blocks, adding 72 for the first wicket, before Bird struck. Keaton Jennings clipped to Samit Patel at short midwicket to depart for 26.

The wicket-taking over was the first maiden to be bowled for 50 overs, spanning four hours of play.

The final session began in dramatic fashion as Bird then took two wickets in two balls, having Stoneman caught by Patel in identical fashion to his opening partner.

Jack Burnham was then pinned lbw first ball.

Michael Richardson played some elegant drives in racing to 17 but then lost his off stump as the Australian grabbed his second four-wicket haul for Notts.

Borthwick passed his 50 towards the end of the day but the visitors are still 341 behind, needing 192 more to save the follow on.
