Notts Outlaws’ batsmen have been in record-breaking form leading up to tomorrow’s East Midlands derby, and Mick Newell expects the run-fest to continue.
The Outlaws became the first domestic team to post consecutive List A scores in excess of 400 in recent days against Northamptonshire and Warwickshire, with Michael Lumb scoring explosive back-to-back hundreds.
With a number of other players also amassing sizeable contributions, Newell couldn’t be happier with his batting arsenal ahead of the season’s first A52 derby.
“This club had never made 400 in a one-day game and we’ve done it twice in three days, which is an unbelievable performance,” said Newell.
“Lumby and Riki take a huge amount of credit, but there have been positives all the way through the order.
“It was great for Greg Smith to make a major contribution, Dan Christian has been fantastic and other people have chipped in as well.
"We’re looking at our batting group now and everybody is in good nick and that’s a great place to be.
“We’ve got five more one-day games before we play a championship match so lots more opportunities, on good pitches, for our batters to continue to play well.
“It will be a good wicket and a fast outfield so expect runs,” said Newell on the visit of the Falcons.
“The most important thing is that we win, but I think you can expect that T20 games at Trent Bridge should see regular scores of around 175-180, certainly that’s the way it’s gone so far.
“With the way people are striking the ball I think we’ve got to be heading in that direction again.”
Newell has the luxury of adding globetrotting all-rounder Andre Russell to the ranks, as the West Indian World T20 winner prepares for the first of his four appearances in green & gold.
“He’s the premier all-rounder in the world in T20 cricket,” said Newell.
“He is going to excite people. He is going to bowl fast, he is going to whack it and he is an excellent fielder.
“This will be the only home match he plays for us, so it is the only chance for our home supporters to see him in action."
Newell is, however, adamant that – despite the addition of Russell’s right arm thunderbolts and Jake Ball’s timely return from England duty - the big hitting won’t be all one way against an in-form Derbyshire outfit who have also won their last three white ball fixtures.
“We know the importance of the match and we will be up for it,” he said.
"Derbyshire have been playing very well. They are clearly focussing very hard on making an impact in the 20 and 50 over formats.
“I’ve got huge respect for the way they are playing their white ball cricket.
"The players don’t want to lose. We lost to Derbyshire away last season and it was very disappointing, but we beat them at home, which is always good.
“It’s still only two points, but it always seems a little bit more special.”
