Nottinghamshire will look to bounce back from the disappointment of last week’s defeat at Taunton, when they return to Headingley on Monday 22 June 2015 for the start of their LV= County Championship match.
Notts will be hoping for a strong performance against the defending champions, on a ground where they haven’t tasted defeat since 2006.
Head To Head
In first-class cricket there have been 253 meetings between the two counties, with Yorkshire leading the way with 91 victories to Notts’ 48. There have been a further 114 draws and another five matches were abandoned.
A variety of venues, including Scarborough, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Hull, Harrogate, Middlesbrough, Sheffield and Bradford have hosted the fixture, with the first match at the county headquarters in Leeds being staged in 1894.
Somewhat surprisingly, only a total of 27 first-class fixtures have been played at Headingley, with Yorkshire winning 10 of them, Notts’ four, 12 matches have been drawn and the brave patrons who turned up to the 1926 match didn’t see a single ball bowled on any of the three days.
Yorkshire’s most recent win at the venue was in 2006 – and that was their first since 1984.
Nottinghamshire’s four triumphs came in 1923, 1989, 2004 and 2011.
The four most recent draws took place in 1991, 2008, 2010 and last year.
Last Time
Last June Notts ran into difficulties when they elected to bat first at Headingley. They were bowled out for only 205 and that was partly due to a ninth wicket stand of 65 between Peter Siddle, who made 39 and Luke Fletcher.
Michael Lumb had earlier top-scored with 45 against his first county. Yorkshire had advanced to 52 for two before rain wiped out the final hour of the opening day.
Little progress was made in the seven overs of play that were possible on the second day and the prospect of either side being able to force a positive result had already diminished.
Yorkshire built a slight first innings lead, despite capitulating to Siddle, who finished with four for 65 and was assisted by Samit Patel’s three for 13.
Notts batted until just before tea on the final day, declaring on 335 for eight in their second innings, with James Taylor scoring 96 and Chris Read, 75.
The home side had been set to score 294 in 39 overs but had limped their way to 53 for three, at which point the two captains agreed to shake hands.
History
In 1932 Yorkshire’s Hedley Verity recorded the best bowling performance of all time against Nottinghamshire at Headingley. Batting again, after taking a first-innings lead of 71, Notts reached 44 without loss before the introduction of the slow left-arm spinner. He then recorded the astonishing figures of 19.4-16-10-10; which included a hat-trick of Willis Walker, Charles Harris and George Gunn – as the visitors capsized to 67 all out and an eventual defeat.
In August 2010, in his 100th first-class innings for Nottinghamshire, David Hussey scored an unbeaten 251 against Yorkshire at Headingley. It was the 22nd century, and third double-hundred, he had scored for Notts. The Australian’s liking for the ground was obvious, this innings taking his career record at Leeds to a total of 832 runs from just eight knocks, at an average of 138.66.
