Battling lower-order half centuries from Tom Keast and Connor Marshall couldn’t help Nottinghamshire Seconds to victory as they fell to a 121-run defeat against Worcestershire.

Trent College was the venue for the Second Eleven Trophy match with Nottinghamshire winning the toss and putting their opponents in, making two early inroads.

Simon Webster got the hosts off to a great start, bowling Alex Hepburn for 0 and Alex Kervezee for 13, Worcestershire 18-2 in the 5th over.

George Rhodes and Oliver Westbury recovered well for the visitors, taking the score past 100 before Marshall trapped the latter LBW for 37.

However, that wicket brought the match-changing partnership together as Rhodes and Ross Whiteley added 201 for the fourth wicket.

Whiteley was the main aggressor, going to fifty from 33 balls and his century from a remarkable 56 balls, including 11 fours and five sixes.

Dot balls were becoming a rarity for the Nottinghamshire bowlers as Rhodes also went to his century, from a more sedate 115 balls.

However, the partnership came to an end when Webster (3-63) returned to take his third, having Rhodes caught on the boundary by Will Root for 101, the Worcestershire pair having taken the score 305-4.

Adam Tillcock further stemmed the visitors charge in the 46th over, removing Whiteley for a 68-ball 135 before bowling Calvin Dickinson next ball.

Regular wickets continued to fall towards the end of the innings but the early damage had been done, Worcestershire closing their innings on 341-8.

Nottinghamshire’s reply was on the rocks early on, falling to 28-4 in the 12th over in their pursuit of Worcestershire’s mammoth total.

Libby was dismissed by Ed Barnard for nine before Liam Smith removed Tom Moores, Root and Tillcock in a lethal opening spell.

Dal and Jake Fish rebuilt after the early wickets but when Whiteley returned to bowl the former for 14 and Darrell Williams had Fish stumped, Notts had lost their first six wickets for just 80 runs.

The likelihood of a positive result for Notts had all but gone but that didn’t stop Keast and Marshall from 92 for the seventh wicket.

Their partnership came to an end when Williams bowled Keast for 70 in the 43rd over, Nottinghamshire eventually closing their 50 overs on 220-8.

Marshall remained not out at the end on 54 with Webster having added to his three wickets with a quickfire 32 from just 23 balls.
