Notts Outlaws face one of their most important NatWest T20 Blast matches for some time when they host Derbyshire Falcons at Trent Bridge on Friday evening.

The Outlaws, quite simply, have to defeat their local rivals in order to keep alive hopes of qualifying for the knock out stages of this year’s Blast competition.

This will be the final home match for the Outlaws in this year’s qualifying programme and the side will be looking to avenge last month’s defeat at Derby, before completing their fixtures with trips to Lancashire, Durham and Leicestershire.

Head To Head

The T20 clashes between Notts Outlaws and Derbyshire Falcons have traditionally been some of the most competitive matches in domestic cricket.

This week’s clash will be the 24th time they have come together in the shortest format, with Notts holding a winning advantage of 14 matches to seven.

Two other matches, both of the scheduled fixtures in 2012, fell victim to the weather, with not a ball bowled in either.

At Trent Bridge the margin is six wins to four in favour of the Outlaws but the visitors have triumphed only once, in a rain-shortened game in 2013, in any of the last five completed meetings.

Last Time

The corresponding match last year was played at Trent Bridge on June 20 2014 and the Outlaws emerged with a 27-run victory.

Riki Wessels was the batting hero, making an unbeaten 95 from just 51 deliveries, hitting 10 fours and four sixes as the Outlaws posted 206 for five, their seventh highest T20 total of all-time.

James Taylor made 29, Alex Hales 23 and Steven Mullaney an undefeated 24. Mark Footitt, with three for 50 was the most successful Derbyshire bowler.

In front of a gate of 9,383 the Falcons could only muster 179 for seven in reply, with Wayne Madsen making 65 and Gareth Cross adding 54. Luke Fletcher returned the pick of the figures, ending with two for 29.

History

In the 2010 match at Trent Bridge Derbyshire’s Wes Durston scored 111 out of his side’s total of 192 for six. The Outlaws chased down their target with three overs to spare, to record a five-wicket victory but Durston’s innings remains the highest individual score posted against Notts in T20 cricket.

Ahead of last year’s match the home side were given an inspiring pre-match team talk by the-then Nottingham Forest manager Stuart Pearce. The former Reds full back highlighted the importance of winning local derbies to his audience and his words produced the desired effects as the Outlaws pulled off a comfortable 27-run victory.

Played For Them Both

Good things are starting to happen for Mark Footitt. The left arm pace bowler has consistently been amongst the wickets for Derbyshire over the last couple of years and is now starting to catch the eyes of the national selectors.

Footitt, now 29, was included on England’s recent pre-Ashes trip to Spain and a first international call-up grows increasingly likely.

Born in Nottingham and a pupil at the Carlton le Willows Academy, he made his senior debut for Nottinghamshire ten years ago and played in a total of eight first class matches and also made one T20 appearance for his home county.

He moved down the A52 in 2010 and has seen his career blossom in recent times, bagging 84 first class victims last season.

Amongst other players to have appeared for both counties are: Hashim Amla, Brian Bolus, Wayne Dessaur, Matt Dowman, Scott Elstone, AJ Harris, Mike Hendrick, Richard Hodgkinson, John Morris, Akhil Patel, Harold Rhodes, Mark Saxelby and Pat Vaulkhard.
