Surrey opener Scott Newman has joined Nottinghamshire on loan for an initial one month term.
The 29 year old left hander has played 93 first class matches having made his debut in 2002 and will be available for selection for Nottinghamshire’s LV County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton next week.
“It’s been evident for a while now that the contributions of our openers haven’t been good enough and signing Scott gives us an opportunity to try and make an improvement,” said Notts Director of Cricket Mick Newell.
“He’ll play for our Second Eleven this week and we’ll assess whether or not he comes into the team to face Somerset after that.
“We’ve been very patient with our opening batsmen for the past year and a half but this arrangement gives us an opportunity to have a close look at an experienced player.”
Newman scored 124 in Surrey’s LV County Championship game against Derbyshire in April and has a first class batting average of 41.80.
“If Scott’s loan spell is successful then we’ll look to extend it,” said Newell.
“Having a new arrival can freshen things up and it’s up to the players in our squad to react to it and earn a place on merit.”
