Nottinghamshire moved towards parity with Durham on day two as Ben Slater and Freddie McCann recorded their first half-centuries of the season.
The hosts closed the day on 297 for five in their first innings in reply to Durham’s 378, with Fergus O'Neill completing his five-wicket haul early on the second morning.
Slater provided a platform with a fine 92, with Hameed proving a suitable foil in the opening exchanges.
The pair negotiated the first 16 overs to be 48 without loss at lunch, and after the captain departed for 27, Slater continued his imperious innings.
His knock included 19 fours before he hit Will Rhodes to Emilio Gay at long leg.
Clarke was building another potentially valuable partnership with McCann until a belter of a delivery from Paul Coughlin uprooted his middle stump.
Academy graduate McCann, who scored two centuries in five matches after making his First-Class debut towards the end of last season, continued where he left off and hit 10 boundaries on his way to another Trent Bridge fifty.
He too departed to Coughlin, before Jack Haynes' composed knock was ended by Ben Raine on 30.
