Brett Hutton collected two early wickets before Day One of Nottinghamshire’s Rothesay County Championship clash with Warwickshire at Edgbaston was curtailed by rain.
Rob Yates and Alex Davies both fell to Hutton in his opening spell, but only 9.2 overs of morning-session play were possible as the Bears reached 34-2.
Rain arrived inside the first hour and set in for the remainder of the day, with play eventually being called off around 5pm, leaving Hutton as the standout bowler with 2/22.
Despite a grey morning, play did begin on time, and having called correctly, Haseeb Hameed’s decision to bowl first was immediately vindicated as Hutton struck with only his second ball.
He rapped the left-handed Yates on the pad to see him off for a second-ball duck, before repeating the trick to remove Yates’ fellow opener, and Bears captain, Davies for five.
That left the hosts 13-2, and although Sam Hain and Hamza Shaikh looked to repair the damage, they were only able to bat another 4.5 overs before the heavens opened.
It did not take long for the full covers to be rolled out, before the bowlers’ run-ups were then put under protection shortly after an early lunch as the scene became ever more bleak.
With no improvement in sight, umpires Tom Lungley and James Middlebrook then formally curtailed play late into the afternoon.
