Harry Brook said he will take an instinctive approach to captaincy, as he prepares to stand in as skipper in Thursday’s Trent Bridge clash with reigning 50-over world champions and old rivals Australia.
Brook also emphasised a message of continuity, as the Three Lions look to put their visitors under pressure from the first ball.
“Should be alright,” Brook joked as he told of his excitement to take the reins, “I’m looking forward to the challenge and it should be good fun.
“I’ll make quick decisions and react quickly to what’s happening out there, trying to set different fields to make the batters think. And, as a batter, I’m going to go out there, watch the ball as closely as possible, and play on instinct.”
Although Brook had captained England Men Under 19s in a World Cup campaign in New Zealand, he admitted that further ambitions to lead the men’s first-team side weren’t necessarily at the forefront of his ambitions as a youngster.
Now, though, the 25-year-old is ready to make his mark.
“I’ve done little bits of captaincy here and there, but I never really thought that I wanted to be England captain,” he said, “I’m just happy to play for England and to be out there on the field.
“I’m quite a calm influence. We’ve got a very chilled environment in the changing room at the moment and we’re simply looking forward to getting out there to have some fun. We want to go out there and be entertaining, we want to entertain the crowd, and take the game on by putting the opposition under pressure.”
With the visitors boasting the firepower of Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell and Steve Smith - to name but a few - Brook is fully aware of the task at hand for his bowlers in this potential blockbuster.
“They’re an unbelievable side,” he said, “They’re reigning one-day champions and we’re looking forward to trying our best in taking them on.
“But all of our bowlers are wicket-takers, the ball could go to anyone at any stage and I’d have full faith in them to take a wicket. Rash (Adil Rashid) is the outstanding bowler, but I’ve got faith in everyone out there.”
