Nottinghamshire continued their proactive start to the season with the bat on day two of their friendly against Derbyshire, with three batters passing 50 before rain curtailed the final day’s play.

Responding to the visitors’ 203/4 from 60 overs, Notts amassed 260/5 from 50.4 overs – with Haseeb Hameed (50), Matthew Montgomery (73) and Lyndon James (50) all making sizeable contributions.

Hameed signalled his positive intent early in the day’s play, hoicking Sam Conners into the higher reaches of the PKF Smith Cooper stand for the innings’ first six, and showing a deftness of touch behind square when facing former Outlaw Zak Chappell.

His 50 would arrive from 53 balls, before an expansive drive was well held in the cordon by Ben Aitchison.

Joe Clarke’s cameo proved equally entertaining, a purist-pleasing cover drive off Aitchison the highlight of his 31 from 33 deliveries before athletic work on the boundary’s edge led to his departure.

Montgomery, having made a watchful start to his innings on day one, now began to pepper the boundary with regularity, taking a particular liking to the shorter-pitched deliveries of Conners and the medium pace of Anuj Dal.

He compiled a 91-run stand with James before retiring after a rain-lengthened lunch interval.

James would chalk up his own half-century in the company of Steven Mullaney, with the skipper unbeaten alongside wicketkeeper Moores as the weather closed in once more.
