New Zealand international Will Young has signed a short-term deal with Notts, covering three midsummer LV= Insurance County Championship fixtures.

The Kiwi arrives with experience on the global stage and three county cricket centuries to his name.

International experience

Capped on 41 occasions by his country, Young has represented the Blackcaps across all three formats – with a high score of 120 coming from 112 deliveries in a 2022 One-Day International against the Netherlands.

The top-order batter has been ever-present in his country’s last 10 internationals, hitting 87 in a winning cause against Pakistan on his most recent outing in Kiwi colours.

County caps

Young’s previous appearances in English domestic cricket have seen him amass two tons for Durham – including 124 against eventual County Champions Warwickshire – before compiling a century and four fifties, and taking the reins as captain, during a stint at Northampton.

A Trent Bridge return?

Young’s sole outing to date on the Trent Bridge turf came in the unforgettable Men’s Test of 2022.

But before Bazball was truly born on day give, the Blackcaps opener proved his international class in what were, at times, bowler-friendly conditions.

Young shared in a stand of 84 for the first wicket on day one, ultimately falling for 47, before recording a redoubtable half-century on day four as a home side spearheaded by James Anderson looked to capitalise on the cloud cover.

The tourists had a lead of 145 runs, with six wickets in hand, as the right-hander was unfortunate to be run out.

Helpless as his teammates stumbled from 204/5 to 284 all out, Young was powerless to prevent a Jonny Bairstow-inspired England from romping to victory on day five.

But, having starred in New Zealand’s most recent IT20 series – and with the Blackcaps’ white-ball side visiting Trent Bridge in September – and opportunity to right those wrongs in Nottingham may well be around the corner.
