Samit Patel’s latest short-format triumph, for Lahore Qalandars in the 2022 Pakistan Super League, takes his career trophy tally to eight in his near two decades in the sport.
A brace of County Championship triumphs, a pair of List A trophies and two T20 Blast victories with Notts join a duo of glittering PSL campaigns in the Natural Born Thriller’s trophy cabinet.
Here, we take a closer look at each of his victorious moments.
2005 County Championship
A fresh-faced Patel had his first taste of trophy success back in 2005, aged just 21.
With a batting line-up able to call on the likes of captain Stephen Fleming and talismanic overseas star David Hussey, and a bowling unit led by Mark Ealham, Ryan Sidebottom and Gareth Clough, Patel had to wait patientky for his first-team opportunities.
However, there would be no finer learning environment in which to launch his career.
2010 County Championship
By 2010, gone were the likes of Fleming, Jason Gallian, Darren Bicknell and co. They were replaced by players of the calibre of Hashim Amla, Adam Voges, while Patel's reputation continued to grow.
750 runs and 26 wickets were the return for the ever-present all-rounder as a second Championship pennant came back to Trent Bridge on his watch.
Perhaps his most crucial intervention came with a 91-ball 96 against Lancashire in the final game of the season which, along with the catch of Shivnarine Chanderpaul off Andre Adams, completed one of the most remarkable conclusions to a red-ball season.
2013 Yorkshire Bank 40
Patel's all-round capabilities came to the fore once more in 2013, with his 566 runs at 47.16 being the fifth-most of anyone in that year’s competition.
Those were coupled with 15 victims to his wily off-spin, including Chris Cooke, Jim Allenby and Murray Goodwin in an emphatic dispatching of Glamorgan in late September at Lord's.
2017 Royal London One-Day Cup
So, to 2017. Described by the majority of those who graced the outfield that summer as one of the best cricketing years of their career.
First on the road to the Outlaws' success was an Alex Hales-headlined performance at Lord’s on the first day of July.
But never one to be too far from providing a memorable performance, Patel’s heartily-celebrated dismissals of Jason Roy, Scott Borthwick and Ollie Pope laid the foundations for Hales’ brilliance.
A scarcely-believable knock of 122* versus Essex in the quarter-final had been equally crucial, as Notts made their way towards the Lord's showpiece in nailbiting fasdhion.
2017 NatWest T20 Blast
Patel would complete the English domestic set in the same summer as the Outlaws secured their first short-format title under the stewardship of Dan Christian.
A run-out in each match and an unbeaten 64 in the final were the endings of a fruitful campaign, in which he claimed 16 scalps and scored 405 runs across the tournament.
Having witnessed the birth of the shortest format in England, and represented the Outlaws in each of the editions, few deserved to lay their hands on this particular piece of silverware more than Patel.
2018 Pakistan Super League
Having completed the trifecta on British shores, it was time to look further afield.
As the 2010s wound down an increasing number of cricketers spent their winters traversing the globe and Patel was no different.
His slow left-arm varieties found new purchase in the Middle East as the displaced Pakistan Super League was to be his latest triumph.
His 13 victims came at an average of under 15 as Islamabad United took home the spoils in the second edition of the tournament.
2020 Vitality Blast
In the middle of an unprecedented summer, the Outlaws brought some much-needed joy to their faithful members and supporters in the form of a second T20 title.
Patel’s role had mostly been limited to a bowling capacity, with 11 wickets at an average of 26 and an economy of 7.52 his tournament analysis.
With a batting line up able to call upon the likes of Alex Hales, Joe Clarke, Ben Duckett and Dan Christian, Patel’s contribution was limited to just five innings.
However, his 28* versus local rivals Leicestershire Foxes could not have been better timed.
On a dramatic evening, in front of an empty Trent Bridge, his last-over six set the scene for a thrilling tie, which the Outlaws won on countback having scored more runs in the powerplay.
2022 Pakistan Super League
Patel’s allegiance had switched sides by the time he returned to the PSL in 2022, this time turning out for the Lahore Qalandars.
And come Sunday evening, an eighth title was his, and the first for the franchise based out of the country’s second largest city.
Now, as he gears up for his 21st season as a professional cricketer, few would bet against the man for the big occasion providing more memorable moments in the months and years to come.
