The tireless work of the Trent Bridge heritage team has earned national recognition at the inaugural Sporting Heritage Awards.
The team were named joint winners of the ‘Recognising Sporting Heritage Volunteers Award’, having deepened and diversified their work to document the history of Nottinghamshire cricket in recent years.
Award judges hailed the team’s ‘invaluable’ range of skills, the high quality of the activity they carried out for spectators and online audiences, and their chronicling of the Covid-19 pandemic’s impact upon the game.
The heritage volunteers shared their accolade with the CC4 Museum of Welsh Cricket.
“All of the volunteers that I’m privileged enough to work with give their time solely because of their love of the game and of Trent Bridge – we certainly don’t expect to receive national attention on this scale,” said Heritage Officer Steve LeMottee.
“However, I couldn’t be prouder to have collected this award on their behalf. Their skills and knowledge are exemplary, but it is their passion and commitment that is truly humbling to see.
“Rediscovering and recording the near two-century history of Trent Bridge is simply fascinating, and we can’t wait to see what else we’re able to uncover.”
Recent projects undertaken by the team have included commemorations of the 150th anniversary of WG Grace's first appearance at Trent Bridge, Stuart Broad's 500th Test wicket, the 250th anniversary of the first cricket match in Nottingham and the re-organisation of the Wynne-Thomas Library. This year's featured topics will include ‘Royalty at Trent Bridge’ and a look at the links between New Zealand – the visiting Test nation – and Nottinghamshire.
Other award-winners honoured by Sporting Heritage included Women in Rugby League, the National Football Museum, Watford FC and the National Paralympic Heritage Trust.
