Tom Moores offered stout resistance for Nottinghamshire on a second day which saw Durham’s seamers take the upper hand in their opening County Championship fixture of the season.

Moores remained unbeaten on 40 at stumps, with Notts 165-7 in reply to the visitors’ 330 all out.

The wicketkeeper-batsman was aided by homegrown all-rounder Liam Patterson-White (26), with the duo compiling a stand of 56 for the seventh wicket, after Lyndon James (28) began to steady the ship following an early flurry of scalps.

Nottinghamshire’s reply came after Durham constructed something of a recovery with the bat, with their fightback from 196-7 in the evening session on day one led by Ben Raine (59*) and Brydon Carse (25).

The duo’s partnership added 54 before being curtailed by Brett Hutton’s maiden First-Class wicket of his second spell at Trent Bridge.

Raine and Chris Rushworth (31) then added a further 59, before the visiting number 11 was pinned by Steven Mullaney.

Ben Slater saw out a tricky over prior to the lunch interval, before Matt Salisbury and Rushworth made fine use of typical early-season conditions.

While Rushworth maintained a miserly line and length from the Radcliffe Road End, Salisbury picked up the first three wickets to fall, as Slater, Haseeb Hameed and Joe Clarke departed.

Ben Duckett and Mullaney were next to depart, before James, Patterson-White and Moores worked to claw back some of the deficit to Durham.

*In common with other grounds, the afternoon session began with players and match officials lining up on the outfield in front of the pavilion to observe a two-minute silence in remembrance of His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh, whose death had been announced during the morning. The flag over the pavilion was lowered to half-mast and the players took to the field wearing black armbands.
