As the countdown to the Outlaws' latest Vitality Blast quarter-final begins in earnest, trentbridge.co.uk casts a glance back to the most memorable T20 knockout ties under the Trent Bridge lights - including Notts' 2010 win over Sussex in a low-scoring thriller.
Notts v Sussex, 26 July 2010
Notts Outlaws 141-9 (Wood 36, Brown 31, Arafat 4-34), Sussex 128-7 (Goodwin 28, Nash 22, Pattinson 3-17, Patel 1-20).
Notts Outlaws won by 13 runs.
A visit from the defending champions, a defiant rearguard action, a nailbiting run-chase – the 2010 quarter-final between the Outlaws and Sussex had it all.
A quickfire cameo from the ageless Ali Brown helped Notts start well, but the tide began to turn once he was bowled for 31 from 16 balls.
By this time, Alex Hales (9) had already departed, and Samit Patel (1) would follow soon after.
Matt Wood helped to muster something of a fightback but, when he was run out for a 37-ball 36, the Outlaws were staring down the barrel of an underhwelming score.
However, from 98-6 in the 15th over, the Green and Golds hauled themselves to 141-9, with Chris Read and Ryan Sidebottom piercing the field with regularity.
Sussex possessed a fearsome opening pair in Luke Wright and Chris Nash, but the duo were unable to build on a promising start.
Wright fell to Darren Pattinson for 18, before Nash (22) was lbw to Patel on a night where taking pace off the ball proved fruitful.
Pattinson's 3-17 led the way, with the one-time England international also accounting for Murray Goodwin and Yasir Arafat.
But this was an evening where the story of the game was told in the economy column, Patel conceding just 20 from his four overs and Mullaney 18.
In a format where even one loose delivery can prove terminal, the duo remained immune to the pressure.
The South Coast county ultimately ran out of batsmen, and time, limping to 128-7 as the defence of their crown faltered.
