Yorkshire Vikings v Notts Outlaws, Emerald Headingley.
Match abandoned.
A mid-afternoon drive up the M1, in expectation of a titanic Vitality Blast tussle.
A clash of two heavyweight sides under lights.
Something to be supremely grateful for in this most disconcerting of years – for a long time, the prospect of hearing bat on ball at all in 2020 seemed remote.
But, as so often in the past few weeks of this truncated season, the elements had other ideas.
As the roads narrowed and Leeds’ urban sprawl closed in on the approach to Emerald Headingley, so too did the weather.
Drizzle became rain, puddles became ponds – and one’s mind was cast back to the unseasonable skies under which Notts last won here in 2018, and the gloom that caused last year’s match-up to be abandoned.
At 5.15pm, the rain found another gear, rattling the roof of the Carnegie Pavilion.
And thereafter, while the weather might have stabilised, prospects of any improvement always looked slim.
In truth, the conditions felt more suitable to hold a rugby match in, on the far side of the Emerald Stand.
Ultimately, the umpires were left with no choice but to bow to the inevitable.
In this congested season, the Outlaws and the Vikings will be handed an opportunity to renew acquaintances within the week. Yorkshire will travel to Trent Bridge on Bank Holiday Monday, in a fixture which will be streamed live at trentbridge.co.uk.
Before that comes a jaunt to Emirates Riverside on Saturday, with Durham the opponents.
After such disappointment in Leeds, the anticipation will only move up a notch in the next two days.
