England’s ODI series with New Zealand will go to a deciding fifth game in Christchurch on Friday after the Kiwis levelled at 2-2 in a high-scoring match at Dunedin.

Put in by their opponents, England piled up 335-9 as both Jonny Bairstow (138) and Joe Root (102) made centuries in a second-wicket stand of 190 after Jason Roy had made 42 off 41 at the top of the order.

However, the tourists then lost a succession of cheap wickets as summer signing for the Notts Outlaws in T20 cricket, Ish Sodhi, claimed 4-58, before a late Tom Curran cameo of 22 not out.

New Zealand started poorly as Chris Woakes and Mark Wood struck early to have Martin Guptill and Colin Munro back in the pavilion for ducks, with the score on 2-2.

But from then on the Kiwis batted superbly led by Ross Taylor’s second century of the series, this time scoring 181 not out from 147 balls, including 17 fours and six sixes.

He was ably supported by skipper Kane Williamson, who made 45, and Tom Latham, who weighed in with 71.

As the hosts got home with three balls to spare, Curran was the most successful of the England attack with 2-57.
