Nottinghamshire Club Captain Steve Mullaney hinted he may open the batting in the early games of this season’s Specsavers County Championship, at a Members-only event at Trent Bridge last night.

The 31-year-old all-rounder batted at the top of the order alongside Jake Libby last season, scoring 620 runs in 11 matches at an average of 41.33.

However, the arrival of Chris Nash, a recognised opener from Sussex, has opened up conjecture as to whether Mullaney would drop down into the middle order.

But Mullaney said: “Looking at the balance of the team at the moment, it is quite likely that I will be opening at Lancashire and in the early games.

“But nothing is set in stone until the first game of the season. We will see how things go in the friendly matches before then.”
