Matthew Carter, the 22-year-old Nottinghamshire off-spinner, is among four Outlaws selected for the England Lions tour of India.
The Lincolnshire born bowler will be among the Lions party contesting a five-match series against India A from 23-31 January.
He is joined in the party by fellow Outlaws Joe Clarke, Ben Duckett and Zak Chappell, who will all remain in India for two First Class matches in early February.
Mick Newell, who handed Carter his first-class debut as a 20-year-old in 2015, believes the youngster has a priceless opportunity to showcase his abilities.
“Matt is a talented spinner and someone we have high hopes for at Nottinghamshire,” said Newell.
“He took ten wickets on his first-class debut, which is no mean feat, and his performances in 50-over cricket last season were notable.
“At the age of 22, he’s very much got time on his side as a spinner. We’re hoping to see the best of him over the next ten t0 15 years, and this tour will be a great experience.”
Carter, who joined Nottinghamshire through a well-established partnership with Lincolnshire, made his List A debut in 2018 and went on to take 13 wickets in five matches at an average of 15. He collected two four-wicket hauls and sustained an economy rate of 4.6 runs-per-over.
“There are significant opportunities for any English spinner to come through and impress,” added Newell.
“England recently achieved a series win with three spinners in their line-up. It’s clear that we’re going to need a bank of good quality slow bowlers moving forward and hopefully Matt can be part of that.”
Each of Carter’s Nottinghamshire teammates on the tour are new signings for the Club ahead of the 2019 season.
Clarke, a close season capture from Worcestershire, is a seasoned performer for the Lions having featured in 28 matches across all three formats of the game.
Duckett, the former Northamptonshire left-hander who made the move to Trent Bridge in August, has played 12 times for the Lions as well as making seven appearances for the full England side.
Chappell’s call-up is his first for the Lions having featured in the North versus South series in March.
“It shows that they’re all in the minds of the selectors and that we’ve signed cricketers who are fully capable of playing international cricket in the future,” said Newell.
“The conditions in India are likely to be challenging, where we’re used to seeing plenty of spin and there’s little in the way of sideways movement for the seamers.
“It will be a good and challenging experience for each of them – and they’ll be aiming to come back having given the selectors something to think about.”
