Nottinghamshire’s first-class fixture against Cambridge MCCU at Fenner’s has been abandoned as a draw.
The first day had been lost to the weather, with areas of the outfield still damp after recent wet weather.
Heavy overnight showers, plus a forecast for prolonged rain over the next two days, left umpires Paul Baldwin and Chris Watts with little option but to immediately rule out the chances of any play on the second day.
With conditions unlikely to improve they decided, in consultation with thr ECB and Head Coaches Peter Moores (Notts) and Chris Scott (Cambridge MCCU), that it would not be possible to start the match.
This is the first time in almost 10 years that one of Nottinghamshire’s first-class fixtures has been abandoned without a ball being bowled.
The last occasion was the championship fixture against Durham, at the Riverside in August 2008, when wet weather on all four days also prevented the toss being made.
The loss of the Cambridge MCCU fixture means Steven Mullaney must wait to begin his reign as Nottinghamshire’s club captain and Chris Nash and 19-year-old wicketkeeper Tom Keast, who was due to play, must also wait for their first class debuts for the county.
Weather permitting, Nottinghamshire will hope to take to the field on Thursday 5 April for the start of a two-day friendly against Leicestershire at The Fischer County Ground.
