Rain was the victor at Trent Bridge as England’s second Royal London One-Day International with the West Indies was abandoned as a draw.

The hosts, 1-0 up from their Jonny Bairstow-inspired victory at Old Trafford on Tuesday, were hoping to take a strong grip on the five-match series in front of an expectant Nottingham crowd.

But the forecast bad weather meant that only 2.2 overs of play were possible before umpires Rod Tucker and Rob Bailey took the players off.

During that time, England had made an excellent start after being put in by the West Indies, whose captain Jason Holder had won the toss.

Both Holder’s first over and Jerome Taylor’s second went for 10 runs each as Bairstow and opening partner, Nottinghamshire’s Alex Hales made their intent clear.

They had moved on to 9 not out and 10 not out respectively when the umbrellas started going up and raincoats going on with the score on 21-0.

The same fate eventually befell Nottinghamshire’s third day of their promotion clash with Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.

Resuming on 33-2 in their second innings, needing 314 to win, they reached 107-3 by the time bad light forced an early lunch, by which time they had reduced the deficit to 207.

However, no more play was possible during the afternoon and evening session as bad light was followed by rain.
