Following Harry Gurney’s automatic inclusion in the inaugural North v South series earlier this year, the incentive is now being widened to include coaches.

In a move that could interest the likes of Paul Franks, Andy Pick and Ant Botha, a coach from the winners of the 2017 Royal London One-Day Cup will be invited onto the coaching staff of either the North or South side for the next series in 2018.

Last year Harry Gurney earned his place in the North squad following his top four finish in the Professional Cricketers' Association MVP Rankings for the 50-over competition, in which Notts face Worcestershire in their opening game of 2017 today (Thursday).

Speaking about the North v South series, Director of England Cricket Andrew Strauss highlighted how the series benefits both the Royal London One-Day Cup and the England ODI team.

“One of our aims in introducing the North-South Series, with a primary focus on the 2019 World Cup, was to recognise the link between the England ODI team and the Royal London One-Day Cup as our domestic 50-over competition," he said.

"Making four places in each of the North and South teams available to the best performers in the North and South groups through the PCA MVP Rankings added an extra incentive to county players in the Royal London last season.

Strauss added: “After discussions with the England selectors, and the coaches who were involved in this year's series, we were keen to continue on the same basis, with four places in each 13-man squad earned through Royal London performances, leaving the remaining nine to the selectors.

"But we also thought there was an opportunity to encourage and recognise the coaches in the domestic game.

“So, the winners of the final at Lord's on 1 July will be invited to nominate a coach to join the staff of either the North or South team in 2018."

The first North v South series took place in Abu Dhabi in March this year and saw the South emerge victorious with a 3-0 series whitewash.

In 2018, North v South will again consist of a three match series. The final details are yet to be finalised.
