Nottinghamshire’s hopes of returning from the north east with a victory were dashed when heavy rain wiped out all of the final day, leaving their Specsavers County Championship match against Durham as a draw, at Chester-le-Street.

The players were ready to make a prompt start but light drizzle began to fall shortly before 11am and conditions continued to deteriorate, causing an early lunch to be taken 90 minutes later.

An intriguing day had been in prospect, with Notts set to resume on 17 for one, requiring a further 300 runs.

The outcome left all of the Notts squad feeling frustrated, including director of cricket, Mick Newell, who said that his side would have embraced the challenge left before them.

“We would have given it a go,” he said. “If we had a full day of cricket in which to score 300, we’d have certainly given it a go.

“It would have been tough but if you look at matches here this season then pitches have got better for batting over days three and four, they haven’t crumbled or deteriorated, so it would have been a tough ask but if we’d been able to bat all day then we’d definitely have been in with a chance of winning the game.”

Notts take a total of 11 points from the match and are next in action on Tuesday, when they host Middlesex in their final home championship match, with the action beginning at 10.30am.
