As Stuart Broad was made to wait for his 100th Test having been rested in Bangladesh, a run of 119 matches where Nottinghamshire have had at least one representative in the side came to an end.
Stretching back to the second Test of West Indies’ 2007 tour at Lord’s, the likes of Ryan Sidebottom, Stuart Broad and Alex Hales have all flown the flag for Notts in the Test arena.
The eight players that have represented England from Nottinghamshire during that time have amassed 704 wickets and 5,388 runs between them, and took part in some historic matches along the way.
The run was started by Ryan Sidebottom, winner of two County Championships during his seven-year stint at Trent Bridge, back in 2007.
With his crucial left-arm variation providing a perfect component in an England Test attack, the now 38-year-old amassed 79 wickets at 28.24 during his longer format career.
His finest year in an England shirt came in 2008 when career-best bowling figures of 7-47 against New Zealand in Napier sent him on his way to 47 wickets for the calendar year, at an average of just 19.7.
That was also the year that Darren Pattinson made his only Test appearance, taking two wickets and scoring 21 runs against South Africa at Headingley.
Over the next six years, two of Nottinghamshire’s finest bowlers recreated their club form on the international scene.
Broad and Graeme Swann would go onto be part of the side that would win three successive Ashes series, including a first triumph Down Under since 1986/87.
During their time as two of the world’s best bowlers in the longest format, Broad and Swann took a combined 487 wickets as the side spent time at the top of the ICC Test Rankings.
Having both also contributed useful lower order runs, Swann’s retirement in 2013 left Broad to fly the Notts flag on his own throughout 2014.
His overall record to date stands at 360 wickets at 28.48, including 15 five wicket hauls, as well 2,647 runs at 21.69 in his 99 Test matches.
His bowling has produced memorable spells such as the 8-15 on the first day of the Trent Bridge Ashes Test in 2015, and 6-17 to rip through South Africa in Johannesburg at the beginning of this year.
James Taylor, Samit Patel and Alex Hales then joined the prolific seamer at different parts of the 2015 programme.
Hales’ involvement stretched throughout most of 2016, having won the South Africa series at the turn of the year with both Broad and Taylor also in the side, and his 11 Test stint yielded five half centuries.
Jake Ball enjoyed a fine One-Day International series in Bangladesh, claiming seven wickets in three matches to add to a Test debut against Pakistan in July where he took the scalp of Azhar Ali.
However, Broad was the only Nottinghamshire member to play a part in the Bangladesh Test series, and after helping guide England to an opening victory, he was rested with one eye on the forthcoming India series.
The first match in Rajkot is likely to mark Broad’s 100th for England in Tests, and the 30-year-old will look to continue Nottinghamshire’s representation at national level for many years to come.
