Despite a breathtaking century from Samit Patel, Nottinghamshire slid to their second defeat of the season when they went down by 53 runs to Warwickshire in their Specsavers County Championship match at Trent Bridge.

Patel’s swashbuckling cameo produced 12 fours, a five and eight sixes in an innings of 124. Despite his heroic knock Notts were bowled out for only 173 in pursuit of their victory target of 227.

Rain prevented any play until 2.45pm, with Notts on 21 for three overnight. That soon became 25 for five as Keith Barker bowled Greg Smith for eight and had Riki Wessels lbw first ball.

Brendan Taylor provided stoic support for Patel in a stand of 89 but when he fell, caught behind off Chris Wright for 26, Warwickshire sensed victory.

The always dangerous Jeetan Patel needed only five deliveries to strike, having Chris Read caught at deep square leg for nought, to leave Notts 115 for six.

Samit Patel then took over. He’d brought up his 50 in just 36 deliveries, with 10 boundaries and then hit Rikki Clarke for his first maximum.

Jeetan Patel suffered the most at the hands of his namesake, being hit over the ropes on seven occasions as Samit looked to pull off the unthinkable.

He lost Brett Hutton, caught behind for two and Jackson Bird, bowled for one, though but he carried on hitting until being last out, finding the hands of Sam Hain in the deep.

Asked if the defeat was down to the top order not firing, the director of cricket said, “I think there is a bit of that but we had Warwickshire 117 for six on Sunday, dropped two catches and there’s no way they should have got 370 from there.”

Notts take seven points from the contest and slip to fifth in the table, with their next championship match coming up on Sunday, when they face Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.
