Nottinghamshire all-rounder Brett Hutton is confident his side are firmly in the driving seat after the hosts closed 191 runs ahead on day three of their clash against Durham.

Scott Borthwick hit an unbeaten 188 to take Durham to within 87 of Nottinghamshire’s first innings 543.

And Hutton, who took 2-70 in Durham’s 447 all out, believes Notts hold a strong advantage heading in to the final day.

“We are still in the box seat, 190 ahead and it comes down to when we want to declare and try and bowl them out,” said Hutton.

“We are in a strong position and if we can go out there, increase the lead before lunch and try and win it with our bowling in the fourth innings.

“It has been another great game at Trent Bridge and it has been good to see a number of our batsmen perform.

“Now it is about winning the game and bowling them out on the final afternoon.”

Durham had threatened to reach parity on first innings when the injured Brydon Carse, batting with Keaton Jennings as a runner, struck 47 alongside Borthwick.

However, Hutton made the all-important breakthrough and from there helped Harry Gurney finish off the tail.

“We were struggling a little bit for some control and Scott was batting really well and it just so turned out it was on my rotation that we got the breakthrough,” he said.

“All of the bowlers in the side are capable of breaking partnerships and today it was a case of convincing yourself that something was going to happen.

“There have been loads of runs scored on this surface so it is good for me to be able to contribute with the ball in getting those two wickets.

“I am in the side as a bowler who can offer something with the bat lower down so my main objective is to be taking wickets, otherwise I probably wouldn’t be in the side.”
