Notts Outlaws are in NatWest T20 Blast action on Friday evening, 17th June 2016; when they face Yorkshire Vikings at Headingley, with a 7pm start.

Both sides are looking for the win that could kick-start a charge up the table. Going into the match they sit eighth and ninth in the North Group, although there are still plenty of matches available for both to make a run towards the top four qualifying places.

Notts have three points from four matches, with a win over Lancashire and a no result against Derbyshire. Yorkshire has only gained one point to date, with a no result and three defeats.

Head To Head

Friday’s contest will be the 25th time that the two counties have met in the domestic T20 competition, with Notts holding a winning advantage of 14 victories to Yorkshire’s nine, with one match abandoned.

This will be the 12th meeting at Headingley, where Notts have won on six previous occasions (2005, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2013 and 2014) and lost five times (2003, 2007, 2009, 2010 and last year).

At Trent Bridge, it’s eight wins to four, in Notts’ favour, with the only abandonment coming in the only match to be staged away from the county headquarters, the 2012 fixture at Scarborough.

Last Time

Last year’s clash at Headingley ran away from the Outlaws very quickly with Glenn Maxwell and Andrew Hodd putting on a century stand in less than 10 overs.

Maxwell made an undefeated 92, scoring his runs from only 48 balls, with eight fours and five big sixes. Hodd matched the Australian, blazing 70 from 39 balls, also hitting five maximums to go with his six fours.

Yorkshire’s total of 209 for four was their best against Notts and looked like being sufficient when the visitors were reduced to 10 for three in only 2.4 overs.

Samit Patel showed some defiance with his best T20 score of 90 not out. Patel also cleared the ropes on five occasions in his 59-ball innings but Notts were always behind the eight ball and closed on 169 for six, a defeat by 40 runs.

History

The meeting at Headingley two years ago is generally regarded as being one of the finest matches ever played in the domestic T20 competition.

It took place on 25th July 2014, with both sides needing a win for very different reasons. The Outlaws entered the arena in second place in the North group and were looking to claim the points to secure home advantage in the quarter finals.

Yorkshire Vikings were fourth and knew they could miss out on the knock out stages if they were beaten and Birmingham Bears won their match.

What transpired over the three and a half hours lives long in the memory of the Notts’ supporters who were there or who were watching the live television coverage.

The Outlaws ran into an in-form T20 star as Australia’s Aaron Finch blazed his way to 89 at the start of the evening, as the Vikings made 200 for five after electing to bat first.

Finch was at his explosive best and made his runs from only 46 balls, with 4 fours and 7 sixes. Jonny Bairstow chipped in with 60 of his own, with Jake Ball’s three for 38 being the stand-out bowling figures.

On a good wicket, with a raucous full house in attendance, Notts set about the unlikely task of chasing down their second highest target of all-time.

Man of the match Alex Hales fired 67 from 40 balls to lead the reply but even with his effort a win looked unlikely with 39 needed from the last 3 overs.

James Taylor and James Franklin combined in the most explosive manner though, to wrap things up with four balls to spare.

Franklin hit his first two balls miles over the ropes for huge sixes, to dampen home enthusiasm but even the most ardent Notts fan couldn’t have imagined how the game would swing so dramatically.

Ryan Sidebottom began the penultimate over with 26 still needed – Taylor’s 4,4,4,6 to end the over was simply sensational and left Franklin to hit another six from the second ball of the final over to seal the win.

Taylor (35 not out, 14 balls 6x4 1x6) and Franklin (19 not out, 6 balls 3x6) had plundered 39 from 13 deliveries to win the match in the most dramatic style imaginable.

News filtered through that Birmingham had won their match so Yorkshire missed out altogether, with Notts going forward to face Hampshire in a home quarter final.

Played For Them Both

Trent Bridge favourite Michael Lumb began his career with Yorkshire and was a member of their side in the opening season of domestic T20 cricket in 2003.

Son of former Tykes opening bat Richard Lumb, 23 year old Michael won the man of the match award for an all-round performance when he faced Notts for the first time in the shortened format.

The left-hander bludgeoned 55 from 26 balls, hitting four fours and five sixes to power the White Rose to 196 for five in front of their own Headingley fans.

Grabbing the ball, Lumb then took three for 32, removing Kevin Pietersen, Bilal Shafayat and Will Smith in Yorkshire’s win.

Amongst other cricketers to have represented both Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire are Greg Blewett, Brian Bolus, Mike Bore, Mark Broadhurst, Gareth Clough, Phil Jaques, Gary Keedy, Younis Khan, Ashley Metcalfe, Ajmal Shahzad, Ryan Sidebottom, Barry Stead, Richard Stemp and Alex Wharf.
