Matthew Carter, the 20-year-old Nottinghamshire spinner who took ten wickets on first-class debut a year ago, is set for a return to the team against Surrey.
Director of Cricket Mick Newell has opted for a quartet of fast bowlers throughout the Specsavers County Championship to date, but could alter that policy in favour of Carter on the traditionally spinner friendly surfaces of the Kia Oval.
“I’ve been working hard this year on different parts of my game to try and get myself back in the team,” said Carter.
“It’s been going really well and I’m sure that’s part of the reason why I’ve now been selected for the squad.
“I had a good bowl against Leicestershire last week, sending down 36 overs which got ne nicely back into rhythm, which is the most important thing as a spinner.
“Surrey tend to play two slow bowlers in most of their games, so hopefully the pitch will generate a little bit of spin as the game goes on.
“I’ve also done a massive amount of work on my batting so I can help the team along with a few runs down the order.
“It just adds another part to your game. Teams are certainly more encouraged to play a spinner if he can bat as well.
“If you can get two or three wickets and back it up with 25-30 runs as well, your value to the team is much bigger."
With only two overseas players allowed to be registered in tandem, and Andre Russell currently with the Club on a short-term contract for the NatWest T20 Blast, Australian all-rounder Dan Christian is set for his second first-class appearance for the Club, in place of fellow countryman Jackson Bird.
Nottinghamshire secured a three-wicket win against Surrey in the opening fixture of the Specsavers County Championship season, and Carter believes that will count for something heading into Sunday’s game.
“As we beat Surrey right at the start of the season, the lads go into the match with that bit of extra encouragement," he said.
“Looking at the league table, the points would be valuable and, if it could be the first of two or three wins, we’d really start climbing the table.”
