Notts Outlaws will be looking to follow up their back-to-back victories at Worcester and Derby with a further success when they return to home territory on Friday evening.

The Outlaws face Durham Jets in the NatWest T20 Blast, 6.30pm start, and will be looking to strengthen their place in the top four of the North Group.

Having lost their opening two matches in this year’s qualifying stages – one of them away at Durham – the Outlaws have picked up eight points since, thanks to three wins and two abandonments.

All three victories have come when batting second and has seen Dan Christian’s side rise to fourth in the table. Durham Jets have won three and lost four of their matches, and currently sit sixth.

Head-To-Head

This will be the 23rd occasion on which Notts Outlaws and Durham Jets have faced each other in T20 cricket, although three of the matches – all in the north east – were abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Of the completed contests, Notts have recorded 11 victories and Durham have won on eight occasions, most recently at Chester-le-Street at the start of June.

There have been 10 contests in Nottingham, with the Outlaws ahead by seven wins to three.

Last Time

Notts Outlaws won last season’s contest by 15 runs, in a match played on a Sunday afternoon at the end of May. They were sent on their way by a bristling half century from Riki Wessels and an inspirational debut performance from West Indies’ international Darren Sammy.

Wessels scored 67 from 41 balls and he shared in a 100-run partnership with Samit Patel, who added 46.

Sammy, who joined Notts for a four-match stint, altered the complexion of the afternoon by removing Calum MacLeod and Paul Collingwood, when both were set, to claim figures of two for 31.

The home side posted a competitive 175 for seven, after being invited to bat first, with Usman Arshad returning two for 19 with the ball.

Durham’s response floundered after losing both openers cheaply and they closed on 160 for six, with Gordon Muchall finishing on 42 not out, although the visitors didn’t ever really recover from Sammy’s twin-strike in the eleventh over.

History

On the very first day of T20 cricket in this country the opening match of the new tournament featured Durham at home to Notts.

The game was played at Chester-le-Street on 13th June 2003 and it was Durham who emerged victorious, with a six-wicket triumph.

Jason Gallian skippered the Outlaws and led the charge with an innings of 62 as his side posted 157 for seven. Opener Nicky Peng led the response with an innings of 49, as the home county cantered to their target with five balls to spare.

In the 2005 match in the north east Nottinghamshire’s Mark Ealham took 34 from one over, bowled by Neil Killeen, hitting 6-4-6-6-6-6.

In the 2013 match at the Riverside Michael Lumb scored 96, the highest individual score recorded by an Outlaws batsman in T20 cricket until Riki Wessels made 97 on the same ground last year.

Of the 18 first class counties only Durham and Notts have not yet had a batsman score a century in domestic T20 cricket.

Played For Them Both

Now with Hampshire, Will Smith represented Notts for five years at the start of his career. During that time he played in 18 first class matches – making his debut in 2002, plus 29 one-day and 21 T20 appearances.

He represented the Outlaws on Finals Day in 2006, famously taking four catches in the semi-final win over Surrey and hitting the last ball of the final for six in the narrow loss to Leicestershire.

Smith moved to Durham in 2007, where he captained them to the second of two County Championship titles.

Others to have played for both Nottinghamshire and Durham include Nathan Astle, Mark Davies, Will Gidman, John Morris, Mark Saxelby and Chris Scott.
