Riki Wessels has signed a new three-year contract with Nottinghamshire, committing him to the Club until the conclusion of the 2018 season.
Wessels has made 177 appearances in all competitions since arriving at Trent Bridge in 2011, scoring 6,792 runs with seven hundreds and 37 fifties.
He was presented with his county cap during the 2014 campaign, a season in which he was the Club’s Player of the Year having averaged 44.92 (Championship), 42.72 (T20) and 27.62 (List A) in the three respective forms of the game.
The right-handed batsman retained his impressive form in 2015, topping 1,000 first class runs for a second consecutive season and passing 50 on 15 occasions in all competitions, including three centuries.
“We knew Riki was a highly talented player when he came here and since then he has blossomed fantastically in all forms of the game,” said Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell.
“We pride ourselves on making players that come to Trent Bridge better and Riki is a good example of that.
“He’s a good team man, he bats at six, he bats at one, he bats at three, he bats all over the place and does his job very efficiently.
“He also fields at slip & short-leg and and he keeps wicket when Chris Read’s not around. He’s got so many things to offer and his teammates appreciate everything he does.”
The 2015 campaign saw Wessels captain Nottinghamshire for the first time when both Read and James Taylor were unavailable, demonstrating the leadership qualities Newell has seen emerge in the 30-year-old.
“He’s got older, he’s grown up, he’s matured and he’s developed a much greater understanding of what a professional cricketer needs to do,” said Newell.
“He’s a leader within our team; important to us in all three forms of the game and a terrific role model for our younger players.”
The 2015 season saw dramatic last-gasp four day victories, thrilling limited-overs contests and an historic Investec Ashes Test, all in the unique surroundings of Trent Bridge.
Next season, we’d wager, will be no less enthralling and frankly we’d hate for you to miss out.
