On this day in 2013, Nottinghamshire batsmen Alex Hales and Michael Lumb fired England to the victory that clinched victory in their T20 series against New Zealand.
Lumb struck a six out of the stadium to secure a 34-ball half-century and victory in the 13th over, after England's bowlers had restricted the hosts to 139-8 at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.
Hales hit 80 off 48 balls to underline his emergence as a leading global exponent in the format as the tourists secured a 2-1 series triumph against Brendon McCullum's men.
"There was a bit in the pitch early on and I didn't make a great start but I got a couple away and felt comfortable after that," said Hales at the conclusion of the successful run-chase.
"If it's in the arc I try to hit through it and luckily enough it came off for me today.
“I always look to play positively but the bowlers had set the game up nicely and me & Lumby just had to keep calm and finish it off."
The unbeaten 143-run opening partnership set a new record for T20 international second innings scores without losing a wicket.
Three years on, Hales holds third position in the world rankings for T20 cricket as England prepare for their two match series in South Africa.
He is a regular in the 50-over format also, contributing scores of 57, 99, 65, 50 and 112 in the recent series against the Proteas.
England are returning to the scene of their Ashes triumph in 2016 for Royal London One-Day Internationals against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
