After the disappointment of failing to reach the T20 Final at Edgbaston on Saturday, Nottinghamshire’s cricketers are back in action on Tuesday (23rd August 2016), when they face Yorkshire at Scarborough.

The reigning Specsavers County Champions suffered a similar fate to the Outlaws at the weekend, losing their semi-final against Durham, but go into this match determined to continue their challenge for a third title in a row.

Yorkshire are currently second in the Division One standings, 26 points behind leaders Middlesex but with a game in hand.

Nottinghamshire’s attention is firmly focused on the other end of the table, with them having four matches left to try and save their top flight status.

Head to Head

In first class cricket there have been 260 meetings between the two counties, with Yorkshire leading the way with 91 victories to Notts’ 48. There have been a further 116 draws and another five matches were abandoned.

Many of those matches were played before the introduction of the county championship, with statistics from that competition again favouring Yorkshire.

In 206 county championship matches they have completed 74 wins to Nottinghamshire’s 26, with 101 draws and 5 rained off.

Exactly 103 of those matches have been played as Yorkshire home fixtures, with a huge number of different grounds staging them.

Apart from this week’s venue, Notts have visited such outposts as Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Hull, Harrogate, Middlesbrough, Sheffield and Bradford, as well as the county headquarters in Leeds.

Solely in Scarborough, the record shows Yorkshire to have won five and drawn six of the 12 meetings, with Nottinghamshire’s only success occurring in 1990.

History – A look back at the 12 previous Scarborough matches

1900 DRAWN

William Goodacre scored a century for Notts in only 130 minutes on the first day but when the second day was lost to the weather there was only a sparkling 155 from George Hirst to enjoy for the home fans before the contest drifted towards a draw.

1955 YORKS WON BY 9 WICKETS

Fred Trueman took 10 wickets in the match, including a hat-trick as Notts were put to the sword. The pace bowler blew the visitors away for just 105 with second innings’ figures of seven for 23.

1960 YORKS WON BY AN INNS & 57 RUNS

184 from Brian Close and 95 from Doug Padgett powered Yorkshire to 408 for four declared. Trueman took six for 39 as Notts fell for 238 and then added a couple more as they slipped to 113 all out, when following on.

1964 YORKS WON BY 8 WKTS

The hosts picked up their third consecutive win over Notts at North Marine Road in a low scoring contest. The decisive performance was put in by Raymond Illingworth, with the finger spinner claiming seven for 89 as the visitors fell for 160 in their second dig.

1978 YORKS WON BY 8 WKTS

Mike Harris scored 98, which was cancelled out by 125 from Geoff Boycott and 99 from Jimmy Love as Yorks built a first innings lead of 31. Richard Lumb, father of current Nottinghamshire batsman Michael, was at the crease with an unbeaten 57 as the home county reached their target of 147.

1985 DRAWN

Tim Robinson’s 118 and Geoff Boycott’s unbeaten 125 were the only memorable moments in an otherwise unforgettable draw.

1990 NOTTS WON BY 5 WKTS

Nottinghamshire’s first win in Scarborough was also one of their best run chases. Yorkshire made 351 for three declared after rain had wiped out the entire first day. Martyn Moxon, the current Director of Cricket at YCCC made 123. Two forfeitures then left Notts with a last day pursuit and Chris Broad and Paul Johnson seized the opportunity to complete the county’s sixth-highest successful chase.

Johnson scored 149 and Broad, father of Stuart, made 126 as Notts reached the tape in 87.3 overs.

1992 DRAWN

Richard Blakey scored a hundred for the home side, with Chris Broad getting 120 for Notts. The only other statistical note concerns Sachin Tendulkar. The Indian superstar played his 16th and final county championship match for the White Rose – and didn’t ever appear in the competition again.

1996 YORKS WON BY AN INNS & 6 RUNS

Two international bowlers took the plaudits, with Notts outclassed and unable to reach 200 in either innings. Darren Gough claimed nine wickets in the match, including six for 36 in the second innings. Only Chris Cairns could hold his head up for Notts, with figures of six for 110 in their heavy defeat.

1998 DRAWN

Tim Robinson hit 114 in Notts’ first innings and Darren Lehmann responded with 131. The visitors were still 12 behind, with only four second innings wickets remaining, when time ran out.

2009 DRAWN

Notts made 395, helped by two astonishing innings. Australia’s David Hussey scored 189 from 205 deliveries faced. He hit 26 boundaries and seven sixes, yet was outgunned in the maximum department by Andre Adams, who cleared the ropes on his way to a 57-ball score of 84. Ryan Sidebottom took five for 59 and Adams claimed four for 39 as the Tykes were made to follow-on but 99 from Andrew Gale guaranteed his side a draw.

2013 DRAWN

Former Yorkshire batsman Michael Lumb scored 135, his first century on the ground as Notts topped 400 in their first innings. The quality of the surface was demonstrated fully as Yorkshire responded with 572 for eight declared, their highest score against Notts. Andrew Gale, Yorkshire’s captain, led the way with a monumental score of 272, with Gary Balance making 141.

Notts are likely to renew acquaintances this week with one of their former favourites. Ryan Sidebottom spent seven years with Nottinghamshire, sandwiched between two spells for Yorkshire. A left-arm quick bowler, he played in 65 first-class matches for Notts, taking 216 wickets at 25.20. Forty-seven List A matches produced 43 wickets and a further 25 wickets came in 25 Twenty20 contests. A member of the side which won the County Championship in 2005 and 2010, Sidebottom was also an England regular in all three formats of the game during his time with the county.
