Nottinghamshire’s batsmen struggled on the second day of their Specsavers County Championship match against Hampshire at Trent Bridge.

Andy Carter, making his debut for the south coast side after a brief spell with Derbyshire, claimed figures of four for 52 as Notts were bowled out for 245 in their first innings.

Chris Read led the charge for Notts, making an unbeaten 70 but the visitors built up a lead of 180 as they reached stumps on 106 for one, second time around.

Notts had begun the day on 39 for one, 280 runs behind, with Steven Mullaney and nightwatchman Jake Ball at the crease.

Carter removed Jake Ball, Riki Wessels and Steven Mullaney within the space of 12 deliveries at the start of the day.

Nightwatchman Ball hoisted his first delivery of the day to Adam Wheater at midwicket for his overnight 14.

Wessels then tried to take the attack to the bowler and lifted a bouncer into the hands of Mason Crane on the fence.

Mullaney reached 5,000 first class runs in his career when reaching 15 but only added five more before unluckily chopping on, to present Carter with his 100th first class wicket.

Brendan Taylor was dropped on five, put down by Will Smith at slip off Brad Wheal. The former Zimbabwe captain couldn’t take advantage as he then clipped Gareth Berg into the hands of square leg for six.

Samit Patel hobbled off after making just four, hit full on the boot by Wheal and sent on his way lbw.

Michael Lumb and Read mounted the fightback with a stand of 54 either side of lunch but it was Carter who separated them.

Lumb made 39 but could only snick a vigorous pull against the big fast bowler and the ‘keeper did the rest.

Luke Wood played positively in racing to 27 but then was undone by a bouncer from McLaren that deflected via bat handle and helmet through to Jimmy Adams at slip.

Read’s 50 came from 70 balls with seven fours as he made sure of reaching 200 and a first batting point.

Liam Dawson wheeled away for 13 consecutive overs from the pavilion end without success and was left feeling frustrated when wicketkeeper Lewis McManus missed a regulation stumping with Imran Tahir on five.

Tahir inflicted some pain on fellow leg-spinner, Mason Crane, by launching a mighty blow away into the Fox Road Stand for six.

Dawson switched ends and managed to polish off the innings by removing Tahir for 25, caught by Carter at short fine leg and then Harry Gurney went leg before first ball.

Will Smith fell lbw to Gurney for 20 when the visitors batted for a second time but by the close Adams had extended his score to 68 not out, leaving Notts with a hefty deficit to claw back on the third day.
