Mick Newell wants to see Tom Moores continue to bat without fear, after retaining the 19-year-old in the squad to face Durham, starting on Wednesday.

Newell believes Moores - who made his Nottinghamshire debut against Yorkshire last week, scoring 23 and 41 - can use the final three matches of the season to cement his progress in the senior ranks.

“He looked very calm and positive. He scored well, he scored quickly and he moved his feet well,” said Newell.

“The way he played in both innings, you would have thought he was a classic number three in some ways; with an aggressive, positive mind-set.

“The best thing about it was that he played the way he’s been playing in the second team. He didn’t change his game, which was good to see.”

The visitors to Chester-le-Street could welcome back Harry Gurney after the left-arm paceman missed the match against Yorkshire with a hip injury, with all 11 players that featured at Scarborough retained in the 12-man squad.

Newell believes Nottinghamshire can emerge from the north-east with victory, but only if the batting line-up finds form.

“I think there’s every chance that there will be a positive result. We’ve got to believe we can win,” he said.

"We're resolved to back the same batsmen that played at Scarborough. You have to back your best players and believe quality comes through somewhere.

“At the moment we have too many batsman averaging 25 or less and that's why we're in trouble.

“We need to score a volume of runs and be better when we’re under pressure. We haven’t scored the number of runs needed to keep us in games, or to dominate them, so we always seem to be hanging on.

“The players are upset and disappointed with themselves at the quality of cricket we’re playing. All they can do is continue to work hard and be supported by the coaching staff to try and turn it around.

“Durham know if they beat us they will be safe, certainly from us catching them, so there’s an awful lot riding on this game.”
