Sam Wood lit up day two of Nottinghamshire’s Second XI Championship season with a quick-fire century against Warwickshire.
The 23-year-old’s 112 off 122 balls spearheaded a first innings total of 357 for the visitors to the Edgbaston Foundation Sports Ground, a first innings lead of three runs.
The home side’s opening duo of Umeed (72*) and Javid (67*), however, piled on an unbroken opening stand of 148, putting an altogether different complexion on the match by the close.
Wood, who made the last of his three first class appearances in 2014, breezed to his fifty in 58 balls and accelerated to a century in just 92 deliveries, including three sixes and 13 fours.
He enjoyed a partnership of 103 with Matthew Carter, who had entered the fray as night watchman the previous evening before going on to post a fluent 49.
Wood was eventually out sinking as he had previously swum against the pace bowling of Brookes, caught on the fine-leg boundary, making the score at that stage 235-5.
The off-spinning all-rounder’s namesake Luke Wood was, however, on hand to continue the good work, striking nine boundaries in an entertaining cameo of 59 off 54 deliveries to take the visitors into the lead.
Ben Kitt closed the innings unbeaten on 32. Leg-spinner Josh Poysden took 5-95 from 27 overs for Warwickshire.
Nottinghamshire’s innings run rate of 4.76 meant there was plenty of time for the bowlers to make inroads.
But, with the Bears openers having other ideas, the fixture is intriguingly poised heading into the third and final day.
