Stuart Broad, the Nottinghamshire and England cricketer whose Ashes exploits earned Trent Bridge a place on the front and back pages of the national newspapers back in August, was named Sportsman of the Year at the Nottingham Sports Awards last night.
Broad scooped the award, which was won by boxing world champion Carl Froch in each of the previous three years, in recognition of his 34 Test wickets during the summer Test series’ against New Zealand and Australia at an average of 22.61.
Most notable of all was his first innings bowling performance of 8-15 as Australia were all out for 60 in the decisive fourth Investec Ashes Test in Nottingham.
Broad is currently ranked by the International Cricket Council as the fourth best Test match bowler in the world.
Chris Read was named Cricketer of the Year following his stellar season with bat and gloves in 2015; the award for which Jake Ball and James Taylor were finalists.
Nottinghamshire’s Second XI were finalists in the Team of the Year category following their championship win, with the award going to Notts County Ladies FC.
The 2015 season has seen dramatic last-gasp four day victories, thrilling limited-overs contests and an historic Investec Ashes Test, all in the unique surroundings of Trent Bridge.
Next season, we’d wager, will be no less enthralling and frankly we’d hate for you to miss out.
