Nottinghamshire’s Second XI got their Second Eleven Championship season off to a flier against Durham, bowling the hosts out for 235 in overcast surroundings.
Greg Smith and George Munsey then took the visitors to 121-1 by the close as Notts made good progress in a game likely to be hampered by rain.
On the first morning at Richmond Cricket Club, Notts won the toss and put Durham in, reaping early rewards when Luke Fletcher removed Jack Burham without scoring.
Stuart Poynter joined Graham Clark but the latter fell to Jake Ball, gifting Tom Keast his second catch as Durham fell to 19-2.
Ball struck again not long after, Adam Hickley the second batsmen failing to trouble the scorers, caught at gully by Smith.
Poynter and Reece Carr steadied the ship and the former reached his fifty off just 63 balls and including eight fours.
However, his stay was ended with the score on 79-4, Brett Hutton the man to make the breakthrough, bowling Poynter without adding to his half century.
That was the last scare before lunch for the home side, Joshua Bousfield (27*) and Carr (52*) guiding their side to 142-4 at the break.
Carr had to retire injured after adding just two to his score, and when Bousfield was Ball’s third victim, LBW for 34, Durham were struggling on 162-5.
The sixth wicket fell with the score on 186, Matt Carter grabbing his first wicket when he bowled Barry McCarthy for 17.
Jamie Harrison was next man in and his 33* was enough to guide his side to 235, but he failed to get support from the rest of the tail.
Carter’s off spin did the majority of the damage, the 18-year-old ending with 4-63, Jake Ball also chipping in with 3-52.
In the final session, Notts replied with Greg Smith and Anuj Dal, the pair putting on 22 before Dal misjudged a ball from McCarthy to fall for 12.
George Munsey joined Smith and the pair pushed the visitors in to a strong position by the end of day one without the loss of any further wickets.
Notts ended the day on 121-1, trailing by just 114, with Smith on 52* and Munsey on 46*.
