Brendan Taylor signed-off from the ICC Cricket World Cup with a second successive century in Zimbabwe’s six-wicket defeat against India.

The 29-year-old, who has signed for Nottinghamshire ahead of season 2015 subject to ECB approval, scored 138 in his country’s total of 287 all out.

A partnership of 190 between centurion Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni ensured that India overhauled the total, despite falling to 92-4 in the 23rd over of their response.

India won the toss and elected to field in Auckland and reduced their opponents to 33-3 after 11 overs; Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Mohit Sharma each taking the first of their three-wicket hauls with the new ball.

But Taylor, batting at number four, steadied the ship by reaching 50 in 64 balls with six fours and adding 93 for the fourth wicket with Sean Williams, who scored 50.

The stand-in Captain accelerated to 100 in a further 99 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes, and past his highest previous World Cup score of 121, scored against Ireland in Zimbabwe’s previous match.

Taylor’s eighth One Day International century means nobody has scored more in Zimbabwe’s history.

He was eventually dismissed for 138, off 110 balls with 15 fours and five sixes, deceived by a slower ball from Sharma.

But with Craig Ervine scoring 27 and Shakindar Raza racing to 28 off 15 balls, the underdogs set their opponents a challenging target of 288 to win.

Four early wickets, including two for  paceman Tinasha Panyangara, raised hopes of a surprise victory for Taylor’s men.

But, following a steadying 38 from Virat Kohli, Raina and Dhoni embarked on their match-winning fifth-wicket partnership.

Raina took the Player of the Match Award for his unbeaten 110 off 104 balls. Dhoni finished 79 not out off 75 deliveries.

India will cross the Tasman to play Bangladesh in the Quarter Finals after topping Group B with six wins from six matches.
